Timeless Truth: In the Beginning - Creation

Our eternal God, who has existed since before the beginning of time, has filled the pages of His God-breathed Word with timeless truth – guidelines and promises straight from Him that should guide the way we walk out our everyday lives.

This month, we will fill in our first section of the timeline, starting at the very beginning, because the moments there remind us of God’s great power and His divine position as the one true God. In the earliest pages of Scripture, we see God as the Creator. Our theme verse this month reminds us that evidence of God as the Creator can be seen all around us each and everyday.

Romans 1:20 | For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

The evidence of God as the Creator is seen in His creation, which is detailed for us in Genesis chapters 1 and 2. They start:

Genesis 1:1-2 | In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

We see all three members of the Trinity (God the Father and the Holy Spirit are mentioned here in Genesis 1. Check out John 1 to see the account of God the Son) taking part in the shaping of our Universe, which begins much like a blank canvas waiting to be filled by the Master Craftsman. In verse 3 -

Genesis 1:3 | God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Genesis continues and we see God isn’t an artist who needs tools like brushes or clay, but is instead the only creator who can simply speak things into existence – creating a “good” (Genesis 1:31) and perfect world from nothing.

Psalm 33:6-9 | The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. He assigned the sea its boundaries, and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs. Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of him. For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command.

As God speaks, all of the Universe is formed in just six days:

Day One: The heavens (space) and the formless watery earth, light (day/night). Genesis 1:1-5

Day Two: Sky (The Atmosphere/barrier between the waters of heaven and earth). Genesis 1:6-8

Day Three: Bounded waters (seas) and dry land with vegetation (plants, trees, seed, fruit). Genesis 1:9-13

Day Four: Sun, Moon, Stars, Seasons, Time. Genesis 1:14-19

Day Five: Fish, sea creatures, and birds. Genesis 1:20-23

Day Six: Land animals and human beings. Genesis 1:24-31

Genesis 1:31a, 2:1-2 | Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.

The first six days of our timeline are filled to the brim with the handiwork of an amazing and creative Creator. Understanding the timeless truth that God created everything leaves mankind without excuse – His creation around us points us to His sovereignty each and every day. God as the Creator also lays the foundation to other timeless truths about mankind’s purpose and the problem of sin.

1st Corinthians 8:6 | But for us, There is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created, and for whom we live. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created, and through whom we live.

For now, remember, true at all times, in all places, for all generations – God is the Creator of everything.
