The Pharisee & Tax Collector: Pride - Clean on the outside & gross on the inside

Matthew 23:25-26 | “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence! You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too.

  • How did the pharisees “clean the outside of the cup” or how did they make sure they looked good outwardly?

  • What does “cleaning the inside of the cup” mean? How is it done?

  • Do you ever pretend to be good on the outside without meaning it inside? When? Why?

  • Is your heart ever gross? In what ways? Would people be surprised to know what is truly in your heart? If so, why do you hide what your heart is truly like?

  • Jesus tells us that if you wash the inside, the outside will become clean too. What does He mean?

  • How can you follow what Jesus teaches in these verses?
