Devoted: To the Lord

Acts 2:42-47 | All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

The early church was devoted! First of all, they were devoted to loving the Lord. Secondly, they were devoted to living in the community, and then, to caring for one another. When they were devoted in these ways, the Lord used them to reach the lost who needed to know who Jesus was. The impact was felt globally. Today many people wonder why they don’t see the Lord move or do anything through them, but if they look at their life, does it look anything like the life of the believer in the early church?

Summertime is an easy time to get distracted by the things of this world and to put our devotion to the Lord on the back burner. At times we don’t even notice the slow fade away from the Lord.

This summer, don’t allow the things of this world (vacations, time off, hobbies, frustration of kids at home) to impact your family’s devotion to the Lord. Make a plan right now for how your family will stay devoted to the Lord this summer.

  • How often will you sit under the teaching of the Word of God?

  • When will you read the Word of God?

  • What things will you do with believers to stay in community (fellowship & prayer)?

  • How will you use what God has blessed you with to help other believers?
