The Wheat & the Tares: Weeds try to distract the wheat

Romans 16:17-18 | And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people.

  • In the parable of the wheat and the tares (weeds), the weeds are planted by the enemy. Who is our enemy? Why does he want pretenders among God’s people?

  • According to Romans 16, pretenders in the church cause what kind of trouble?

  • Are you ever a person who causes division — through gossip, disagreements, bitterness, or arguing? When you do this, who are you serving, according to Romans 16?

  • Do you ever listen to people who complain, gossip, or divide? What should you do instead?
