Down to Earth

Each and every day, we find ourselves searching for someone we can connect to or relate with. We want someone who understands who we are, how we think, and what we feel. But over and over again, we are let down by the people in our lives— parents, teachers, and even our friends. There are limits to their ability to relate and we end up feeling like no-one truly understands or “gets” who we are. So we try a boyfriend or girlfriend, a new friendship, or anything that helps us feel normal and loved. While these connections can make us feel understood for a time, they will always let us down. They leave holes in our hearts that we constantly try to fill (or worse, escape from).

These holes, or the emptiness we feel, started when our sin separated us from our Creator. God designed these feelings so they would drive us straight to Him as our Maker. But do we even want His help? Do we believe he can understand? After all, He’s God — perfect, living in Heaven, and so far out of reach, right?

Although He is King of all Kings, God the Son- Jesus, handed over his crown because of His great love for you. Becoming man, he came DOWN TO EARTH to be “down to earth,” so that He could relate to the struggles we face everyday. We’ll see how he was misunderstood, used and abused, betrayed, abandoned, anxious, fearful and so much more. We’ll see that He not only experienced these struggles, but He overcame them without giving into the flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Will you humble yourself before your Creator and Lord, by casting your crown before His feet, giving Him His rightful place as the King of your life? Will you allow him to be your Lord, the master of your heart, soul, and mind? Or will you continue to hold on to that crown, allowing yourself, relationships, or the approval of others to be your master?

Philippians 2:6-8 | Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Hebrews 4:14-16 | So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

  • What did Jesus give up to become human? Why would He do that?

  • Because Jesus came down to Earth, and became human, he went through the same things we do. What are some things Jesus experienced as a human?

  • When you are struggling, do you think of Jesus as relatable and someone who understands? Why or why not?

  • Why is it important for God’s followers to remember that Jesus is relatable and cares about our struggles?
