The Pharisee & Tax Collector: God honors the humble and humbles the proud

James 4:10 | Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

  • What does it mean to be humble? (Hint- its the opposite of being prideful)

  • Are you humble before the Lord? In what ways?

  • Why does the Lord lift up or honor the humble and not the proud?

Matthew 23:11-12 | The greatest among you must be a servant. But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

  • To God, what does humility (being humble) look like? What does a humble person do?

  • Do you exalt yourself (put yourself first, make yourself look best) or do you serve others? What does this verse say will happen to you?

  • Think back to Sunday’s lesson/devo. What does a humble person know? Is this true in your life?
