Overcomer for the OUTCAST: Jesus’ family tree

The Christmas season is here! Even the world has dubbed this “The most wonderful time of the year!” Honestly, it can seem magical – twinkling lights, generosity, and friendlier-than-ever faces. Children everywhere bubble over with expectancy for what the season holds. For followers of Christ, the season has even more meaning as it represents the ushering in of the Savior who was Promised – who was part of God’s plan since the beginning of time.

Back to the Future: [Un]expected return- Encouragement for today

1st Thessalonians 4:16-17 | For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words.

Back to the Future: [Un]expected return- The parable of the great banquet

Luke 14:15-24 | Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!” Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’ But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’ The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full. For none of those I first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.’”

Back to the Future: [Un]expected return- The rich man & Lazarus

Luke 16:19-31 | Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores. As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores. Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried, and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side. The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’ But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.’ Then the rich man said, ‘Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father’s home. For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote.’ The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God.’ But Abraham said, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Back to the Future: [Un]expected return- Ten Bridesmaids

Matthew 25:1-13 | Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps, but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil. When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight they were roused by the shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’ All the bridesmaids got up and prepared their lamps. Then the five foolish ones asked the others, ‘Please give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.’ But the others replied, ‘We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’ But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom came. Then those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked. Later, when the other five bridesmaids returned, they stood outside, calling, ‘Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!’ But he called back, ‘Believe me, I don’t know you!’ So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.

Back to the Future: [Un]expected return

We’re wrapping up our jump back to the future in the final chapter of Revelation this week. John’s glimpse into heaven is done and he is given a final message:

Revelation 22:7a | “Look, I am coming soon!”

In fact, in just this final chapter, Jesus says three times– “I am coming soon!” (Revelation 22:7, 12, 20).

God’s plan for the future, the promise of Heaven, and the defeat of Satan have all been laid out and now the parting and most important message is that the return of Jesus – the future – is soon.

This might seem kind of crazy since John was alive 2,000 years ago and Jesus hasn’t yet returned. But the same passage that tells us that God is patiently waiting because He doesn’t want anyone to perish says:

2 Peter 3:8 | But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.
