The Prodigal Son: From Unworthy to Son

Romans 8:15-17 | So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.

  • The lost son thought he’d go back to his father as a slave/hired worker. What is the difference between a son and a slave?

  • The Bible says that we’ve been given God’s Spirit and been made his child. Do view God as more of a Father or a slave master?

John 1:10-12 | He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

  • How does a person become God’s child? Have you done this yourself? How do you know? (Look back to the promise in Romans 8 if you’re unsure).

  • Is viewing God as a Father easy or hard for you? How does He relate to your earthly father? How is He different?

  • As your perfect Heavenly Father—

        • How does God view you when you mess up?

        • How does He rejoice when you follow His ways?

        • How can you trust Him with your feeling and struggles?

  • As God’s child, what is your inheritance?
