Satan’s Strategies: Staying Silent

The past few weeks, we’ve been looking at the strategies of Satan-

Ephesians 6:11 | Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.

This is because Scripture commands us-

1st Peter 5:8-9a | Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.

To be alert and on guard, we have to understand his battle strategies. First, he aims to convince the unbeliever to reject Christ. If that fails and a person becomes a believer, his strategy shifts to distraction – keeping the believer from pure devotion to Christ (2nd Cor. 11:3). He uses anything and everything he can to keep us distracted- busyness, earthly treasures, fear/worry, anger, worthless disagreements, persecution, and even sin!

Distractions: Sin

Galatians 5:16-17 | So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

Distractions: Anger/Unforgiveness

Ephesians 4:26-27 | And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.”Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

2nd Corinthians 2:5-11 | I am not overstating it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more than he hurt me. Most of you opposed him, and that was punishment enough. Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement. So I urge you now to reaffirm your love for him. I wrote to you as I did to test you and see if you would fully comply with my instructions. When you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.

Distractions: Fear/Anxiety

Philippians 4:6-8 | Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Distractions: Busyness

Luke 10:38-42 | As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Satan’s Strategies: Distraction

Last week we began looking at the strategies Satan uses in spiritual battle.

Ephesians 6:11 | Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.

We began with his first strategy – waging an all-out war to convince the unbeliever to reject Christ. He works hard to keep people from understanding the Good News and the breadth of God’s love and grace.

2nd Corinthians 4:4 | Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.
